DO NOT DRIVE THE CAR.
A potential defect may affect the vehicle's braking performance. The vehicle must not be driven until it has been inspected and, if necessary, repaired by an authorized service partner.
A call center agent will contact you to arrange a short-term workshop appointment.
Do not drive the vehicle to the workshop yourself. The call center or service partner will coordinate the appropriate transport or recovery of the vehicle.
Campaign code: TBR26003-2
Vehicle: smart #5
Affected vehicle code: HY11
Campaign: Vehicle total upgrade via SVDS
Campaign type: Safety-related technical campaign / recall
What is this campaign about?
A small number of smart #5 vehicles are affected by a software-related issue within the braking system.
Under very specific circumstances, the braking software may underperform on surfaces with particularly low friction. This could result in unexpected skidding and, in certain situations, a loss of control of the vehicle.
Testing has shown that the issue may occur on specific low-friction surfaces, such as epoxy or tilted floors, particularly in icy or wet conditions.
The issue could not be reproduced on normal road surfaces, and smart is currently not aware of any cases where this situation has occurred during normal on-road driving.
What is the potential safety risk?
If the specific conditions described above occur, the braking behaviour of the vehicle may be affected. It cannot be ruled out that the vehicle could skid and the driver could temporarily lose control of the vehicle.
For this reason, affected vehicles require a software update.
Which vehicles are affected?
The campaign applies to a limited number of smart #5 vehicles with vehicle code HY11.
Customers identified as owning an affected vehicle may receive a notification based on DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency) vehicle registration records.
Whether an individual vehicle is affected should be confirmed using the vehicle identification number (VIN) through the appropriate smart service or campaign system.
What needs to be done?
Affected vehicles require a vehicle software upgrade via SVDS.
The software update corrects the issue so that the circumstances described in this campaign can no longer occur.
How long does the repair take?
The software update is expected to be completed within the same day.
The actual time required may depend on the workshop schedule and individual vehicle circumstances.
Is there a cost to the customer?
No. The required software update will be carried out free of charge.
Can the vehicle still be driven?
The issue has only been identified under very specific low-friction conditions and could not be reproduced on normal road surfaces. No on-road occurrences were known at the time of the campaign communication.
Nevertheless, because the issue could affect braking behaviour and vehicle control under the described circumstances, affected customers should arrange for the required software update to be completed.
What should affected customers do?
Customers who have received a notification for campaign TBR26003-2 should contact an authorised smart service partner to arrange an appointment for the software update.
When contacting the service partner, customers should have their vehicle identification number (VIN) available so that the vehicle's campaign status can be confirmed.
